Simply, the world needs Charlie’s work right now.
– Miranda Hart
Yesterday was a bright and sunny SoCal day and yet a storm was brewing. If you have a child with a neurodivergent brain – you know dark clouds can gather suddenly. On the surface it was a dreamy day. A successful visit with a UCLA doctor we both love. A ride on our scooters. Spinning old records and belting out familiar songs. An afternoon trip to Target where we each selected something we thought would be good for our peace of mind. Bella chose a meditation doll. I took a book.
We ate vegetarian sushi & shared a large bottle of fizzy water in the car. I read the book out loud and wept as I often do when a book touches me. Bella laughed at the familiar punchline in the story. She said, “Let’s put this book on the Rainbow Girls site because it’s a really good story of friendship and will give a compliment to the writer.”
So here goes…
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy is a quick and worthy read. You can read it cover to cover at lunchtime and feed your heart while you fill your belly.
The inside cover features a music score. The title of the piece is “Lively and in Strict Time” – a clippety-clop jaunty tune.
A quick google search will lead you to discover that the author is as delightful as his creations.
Bella’s take: “An amazing friendship story – and funny too – the mole who likes cake is my favorite character.”

“It’s great. I love it. It reminds me of the Hundred Acre Wood with Christopher Robin and his stuffed animals.” – Bella
Each page is a work of art. The simple lines of thoughtful prose seem “important.” That is the word Bella kept coming back to…
Yes, this feels like an important work. Something we can read over and over. A book to be enjoyed by young and old for generations to come.
Thank you, Charlie, for sharing your work. You shine a light. You are a rainbow.
